Layers of Stillness
By Rajiv Shah
Rendered entirely in charcoal on A4 paper, the artwork focuses on the intricate structure of the flower, with each overlapping petal gradually emerging from deep shadows into softer highlights. The strong tonal contrasts give the composition a sense of depth and three-dimensionality, while the surrounding softness creates a calm, almost meditative atmosphere.
I was particularly drawn to the way light catches the edges of the petals, revealing details that might otherwise remain hidden in shadow. The monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the delicate textures and organic forms rather than colour.
The piece is part of my ongoing exploration of charcoal as a medium for capturing light, texture, and emotion through simple yet expressive forms.
